Rachele Riley (US)
Rachele Riley holds a MFA in Design/Visual Communication from Virginia Commonwealth University (2005), a Vordiplom from the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle (2001), and a BS in Studio Art from New York University (1990).
Riley’s multi-faceted work investigates the representation of conflict and place. Her approach involves both poetic and methodical processes, and focuses critically on the collection, generation, and interpretation of data. Her work explores the interplay of visual/textual and creates experiences that layer the imaginary, emotional, invisible, and disorienting, as well as the concrete.
Her works have been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad—recently at Weeks Gallery in Jamestown, NY (2016), at SIGGRAPH in Vancouver, Canada (in 2014) and at the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK (in 2013). She has published in journals— Studies in Material Thinking, Special Issue: Visual/Textual (2015), Leonardo/Journal of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (2014)—and is included in Print Magazine Regional Annual 2008 and in Motion Design (Woolman, 2004). She regularly presents at conferences, most recently at the CUMULUS: The Virtuous Circle (with Joshua Singer) in Milan, Italy, at Nordic Design Research (NORDES): Design Ecologies in Stockholm, Sweden, at the Art and Cartography Commission: Mapping Ephemeralities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and at DesignInquiry: NoQuo in Vinalhaven, ME (all 2015). Her ongoing project, The Evolution of Silence, was recognized by the 18th Annual Webby Awards as an Official Honoree in NetArt. She has received support from faculty research funding, and through external research grants from the DigitalGlobe Foundation and the USA Projects Open Match Fund.
She is currently Assistant Professor in Graphic Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 2013–2015, she served on the Board of Directors for DesignInquiry—a non-profit educational organization devoted to researching design issues in intensive team-based gatherings. She lives and works in Urbana, IL, USA.
